What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students listen while others speak, wait for a turn, and respond to the shared topic. They follow agreed signals, such as raising a hand or passing a talking object.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can join partner, small-group, and whole-class talk without calling out. The student stays on topic and shows listening by answering or adding a related idea.
Common Misconceptions
- Some students think listening only means staying quiet, even when their attention wanders. Others interrupt to avoid forgetting an idea or share stories that do not match the topic.
How to Assess It
- Ask groups of three, “Which part of today’s story did you like best?” Watch each student wait, listen, and give one related response.

Ways to Teach It
Pass a talking stick after a read-aloud, allowing only the holder to share one idea connected to the story.
Ask partners, “What makes someone a good listener?” and have each child respond after repeating one idea their partner shared.
Play Topic or Not, reading sample comments while students show thumbs up for related comments and thumbs down for unrelated ones.
Hold a mock class meeting to choose a recess game, with each child waiting, listening, and giving one related reason.
