What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students stay focused during a conversation and contribute ideas at several points. They listen closely, respond to others, ask relevant questions, and help keep the group on topic.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student stays focused, takes turns, and contributes more than once. The student responds directly to classmates, asks useful questions, and adds relevant details.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think being active means talking often or speaking over others. They may stay quiet after sharing once, repeat a classmate’s idea, or shift off topic.
How to Assess It
- In a five-minute group talk about a class text, tally whether each student shares an idea, responds to a peer, and asks a relevant question.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups a puzzle to assemble, requiring each student to explain one piece placement and respond to a teammate before touching another piece.
Ask, “Which character made the best choice?” and have students cite one detail, then build on or question a classmate’s response.
Play Discussion Bingo with squares such as ask a question, add evidence, invite a peer, clarify an idea, and connect two comments.
Hold a class meeting to choose a new recess activity, with each student proposing, questioning, or responding to one option.
