What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students prepare ideas and evidence before talking with a group. They listen, respond directly to others, and keep comments focused on the topic. They share speaking, decision-making, and task responsibilities.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students enter discussions prepared with notes and text evidence. They explain ideas, build on or challenge classmates’ points, and invite quieter peers to speak. They complete their assigned role and help the group reach its goal.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat frequent talking as strong participation, even when comments lack evidence or repeat earlier points. Some dominate, interrupt, or stay silent. Others assume the group leader must complete most of the work.
How to Assess It
- Give groups six minutes to discuss whether a character made a fair decision. Track whether each student offers evidence, responds to a peer, and completes a group role.

Ways to Teach It
Give each group role cards for facilitator, evidence finder, connector, and recorder, then rotate roles during a discussion of a short text.
Ask, “What makes a group discussion productive?” Students write one claim, then discuss it using examples from past group work.
Play Discussion Points: groups earn tokens for citing evidence, asking follow-up questions, connecting ideas, and inviting another speaker.
Have teams act as a school committee and recommend one lunchroom improvement using survey data, shared roles, and a brief group proposal.
