What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students prepare ideas and evidence, listen closely, and respond directly to what others say. They guide the group toward a workable decision while adjusting positions and preserving supported alternate views.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student supports a position with evidence, asks useful questions, and invites quieter peers to speak. They can summarize disagreements, adjust a proposal, and explain the final agreement and any remaining alternate view.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think agreement means everyone must abandon a different view. They may repeat their own point instead of responding to evidence, or treat compromise as simply taking a vote.
How to Assess It
- In groups of four, decide which character in the class text bears most responsibility for the central conflict. Each student must cite evidence, paraphrase a peer, offer a compromise, and record any alternate view.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups evidence cards from a class text to sort into two interpretations, then require one shared claim and one noted disagreement.
Discuss: When should a group compromise, and when should a member defend an alternate view? Support the response with a specific example.
Run a consensus countdown where groups rank five solutions in six minutes, earning points for paraphrasing, evidence use, compromise, and balanced participation.
Have students role-play a school advisory committee choosing one improvement within a fixed budget, then present the decision and rejected alternatives.
