What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students listen closely, acknowledge each person’s contribution, and build on useful ideas. They make reasonable compromises so the group can complete a shared task or reach a decision.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students refer to each member’s ideas, ask follow-up questions, and disagree without dismissing anyone. They adjust their own preferences when needed and help the group reach a shared decision.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think valuing an idea means agreeing with it. They may also treat compromise as losing, or accept the loudest speaker’s plan without considering other contributions.

How to Assess It

Give groups four possible themes for a class event and ask them to choose one in five minutes. Each student must acknowledge one peer’s idea and name one concession made.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups straws and tape to build one tower, requiring each student’s design idea to appear in the final structure.

  2. Ask students to write: When should you change your position to help a group reach its goal?

  3. Play Consensus Countdown, where groups rank five book characters and earn points for citing every member’s reasoning before agreeing.

  4. Plan a class service project with a fixed budget, then have teams combine competing priorities into one proposal.
