What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students take part in extended small-group conversations about texts and issues. They listen closely, connect comments to others' ideas, support claims with evidence, and share speaking and group tasks.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student listens without interrupting, paraphrases a peer accurately, and adds a relevant claim, question, or counterpoint supported by the text. The student invites quieter peers in, completes an assigned role, and helps the group produce a shared outcome.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think participation means speaking often, even when comments are off topic or unsupported. They may repeat an idea instead of extending it, or disagree without showing they understood it. Some let one person lead, record, and report rather than sharing the work.
How to Assess It
- Give groups a six-minute discussion on a one-page text. Record whether each student paraphrases one peer, adds one text-based idea, and completes a group role.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups four evidence cards from a shared article; students sort claims, then use each card to extend a classmate's point.
Ask students to write, then discuss: Which character made the best decision, and which classmate's evidence changed your thinking?
Play Discussion Relay: each student must paraphrase the previous speaker, add one supported idea, then pass a token to a new speaker.
Have teams act as a school advisory panel and agree on one lunchroom improvement, using survey results to support their recommendation.
