What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students show they are listening through their body position, responses, and attention to the speaker’s ideas. They ask specific questions when words, details, or directions are unclear.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students face the speaker, avoid interrupting, and respond to what was said. They can restate an idea and ask a specific question when something is unclear.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think listening means staying quiet without responding to the speaker’s ideas. They may ask unrelated questions or pretend to understand instead of requesting clarification.
How to Assess It
- Read a short paragraph aloud, then ask students to tell a partner one key idea and ask one clarification question about a confusing detail.

Ways to Teach It
Give partners matching blocks; one student describes a structure while the other builds it and asks questions without seeing the model.
Discuss: What can you say when a speaker uses a word you do not know? Create a class list of clarification questions.
Play Clarification Bingo with squares such as “Please repeat that,” “What does that word mean?” and “Can you give an example?”
Role-play asking a librarian for a book, listening to the answer, and asking a follow-up question to confirm the location.
