What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students develop and revise a focused research question, then collect, sort, and evaluate information from primary and secondary sources. They combine evidence to support a claim, address opposing views, and produce a cited research product. They avoid plagiarism and use websites, AI tools, and other technology responsibly.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student develops a focused question, adjusts it as evidence develops, and keeps organized notes tied to reliable sources. The final product connects evidence across sources, addresses a counterclaim, uses accurate citations, and clearly documents any AI use.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat the first search result as trustworthy or assume a polished website is accurate. They may summarize sources separately instead of connecting evidence, overlook counterclaims, or cite quotations but not paraphrases. Some may submit AI-generated language without checking facts, documenting use, or revising it themselves.

How to Assess It

Give students two short sources on the same claim. Ask them to choose the stronger source, cite two credibility clues, identify one limitation, and write one synthesized conclusion.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs three printed sources on one issue, then have them rank credibility using author, evidence, date, purpose, and publication.

  2. Use the prompt, “How did one source change or complicate your research question?” and require a five-sentence written response.

  3. Play Source Match by having teams pair evidence cards with claims, counterclaims, source limitations, and correct MLA or APA citations.

  4. Investigate a proposed school policy, survey affected students, compare findings with published research, and present a cited recommendation to the principal.
