What Students Need to Do: Students answer a focused research question using reliable information from several sources. They synthesize evidence, explain their reasoning, cite sources, and choose a format suited to the task and audience.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student develops a focused claim, selects reliable evidence, and connects ideas from several sources. The final report, presentation, or other product uses clear organization, sound reasoning, and accurate citations.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat research as collecting quotations instead of building a claim across sources. They may use weak sources, drop evidence without analysis, or cite inconsistently.
How to Assess It: Give students three short sources and ask them to write one claim, choose two supporting details, and explain how the details work together.

Lesson moves

Give groups a source packet and sticky notes, then have them sort evidence by claim, credibility, and possible use.
Ask students to explain in writing how two sources agree, disagree, or add different evidence to the same research question.
Run an evidence draft game where teams choose the strongest source for each claim and defend each choice in one sentence.
Have students create a brief policy memo using local data to recommend a change to a school rule or community practice.
