What Students Need to Do: Students investigate a focused question and gather relevant information from credible sources. They synthesize evidence into a clear product that follows expectations for argument, explanation, organization, and citation.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student develops a focused claim, selects trustworthy sources, and combines evidence from several texts. The final product uses clear organization, accurate citations, and a format suited to its audience and purpose.
Common Misconceptions: Students may summarize each source separately instead of connecting ideas across sources. They may treat every source as equally reliable, omit citations, or choose a format that does not fit the purpose or audience.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Use two provided source excerpts to write one claim, support it with evidence from both sources, and include parenthetical citations.

Lesson moves

Students annotate three printed sources, then arrange color-coded evidence slips into claim, counterclaim, and background groups before drafting.
Ask students to explain which source best answers a research question and defend their choice using credibility, relevance, and evidence.
