What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students name familiar tools used at home, at school, or while traveling. They explain how an everyday task would change if one tool were unavailable.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can name a tool, tell what it does, and give a logical alternative. For example, without a washing machine, clothes could be scrubbed by hand.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think technology means only phones, tablets, and computers. They may also claim a task would be impossible instead of naming an older tool or method.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to draw one modern tool and complete this sentence: “Without this, I would have to _____.” Have each student explain the drawing.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs picture cards showing modern tools and older alternatives, then have them match each tool to the same task.
Ask, “What would getting ready for school be like without electricity?” Record student ideas on a class chart.
Play Without It: name a tool, then have students act out another way to complete its job.
Walk around the classroom, identify five technologies, and discuss how each one changes the work students or teachers do.
