What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students model how voting, due process, and caucuses work. They identify a problem, gather facts, compare options, select a solution, carry it out, and judge the result.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can explain each step in a democratic simulation and follow agreed procedures. They can defend a solution with evidence, name its tradeoffs, and suggest changes after reviewing the outcome.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat voting as the only democratic process or assume the majority can ignore due process. They may choose a solution before gathering facts or evaluate it only by whether they personally liked the result.
How to Assess It
- Give students a school problem, such as crowded lunch lines. Ask them to list two options, compare benefits and drawbacks, choose one, and explain how students could make the decision fairly.

Ways to Teach It
Run a mock town vote using paper ballots, election rules, vote counters, and a short challenge process for disputed results.
Ask students to write which process, voting, due process, or caucusing, best fits a disputed school election and explain why.
Use scenario cards in teams, awarding points for correctly ordering problem, evidence, options, tradeoffs, solution, action, and evaluation.
Examine a local bond election notice, then identify the problem, proposed solution, voters involved, possible benefits, and possible costs.
