What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify whether a business produces raw materials, makes goods, sells goods, or provides a service. They give examples and explain what each business contributes.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly classify familiar businesses and jobs into the four industry types. They justify each choice by naming the product sold, good made, service provided, or resource produced.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think stores make the products they sell or that farms belong with factories. They may also think services are unpaid or that every business fits only one category.

How to Assess It

Give students four businesses: wheat farm, shoe factory, grocery store, and barber shop. Have them classify each and explain one choice in a sentence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups picture cards of farms, factories, stores, and service businesses, then have them sort and label each group.

  2. Ask, "How can one T-shirt connect a cotton farm, factory, clothing store, and delivery service?" Students write a four-step explanation.

  3. Label four classroom corners, read business scenarios aloud, and have students move to the matching industry corner and defend their choice.

  4. Students examine five local businesses on a map or directory, classify each one, and identify what it produces, sells, or provides.
