What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students classify businesses and jobs as agricultural, retail, manufacturing, or service activities. They compare societies using life expectancy, GDP, GDP per capita, and literacy data.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly classify examples and explain what each industry produces or provides. They use several indicators to compare development and distinguish total GDP from GDP per capita.

Common Misconceptions

Students often confuse retail stores with service businesses or label manufacturing as agriculture because it uses farm products. They may assume the largest GDP means the highest living standards. They may also rely on one indicator alone.

How to Assess It

Classify a wheat farm, shoe factory, grocery store, and dental clinic. Then compare Country A at $5,000 GDP per capita, 70% literacy, and 65 years life expectancy with Country B at $10,000, 95%, and 80 years, citing two indicators.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have groups sort job and business cards into four industry columns, then defend two choices to the class.

  2. Ask students to write which two development indicators they trust most and explain what each reveals.

  3. Play industry charades using cards such as farmer, cashier, factory worker, nurse, mechanic, and clothing store owner.

  4. Use World Bank country profiles to compare two countries and write a three-sentence claim supported by GDP per capita, literacy, and life expectancy.
