What Students Need to Do: Students use research notes to create clear written products and visual organizers. They group facts, organize ideas, and list the sources they used.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can turn notes from two or more sources into a focused journal entry, report, outline, or graphic organizer. The product is accurate, organized, and includes a simple bibliography.
Common Misconceptions: Students often copy sentences instead of putting facts into their own words. They may mix unrelated details, write paragraphs instead of an outline, or omit websites and images from the bibliography.
How to Assess It: Give students a short article with an author, title, and date. Ask, “Create a three-part outline and one bibliography entry using this article.”

Lesson moves

Have students sort printed research notes into categories, then arrange them on a poster as a labeled graphic organizer with source cards attached.
Ask students to write a journal entry from a historical figure’s viewpoint, using and underlining three facts from a source packet.
Play Product Switch, where teams turn the same five research notes into an outline, paragraph, graphic organizer, or bibliography entry.
Use a school lunch menu and nutrition website to create a comparison chart, short report, and simple bibliography.
