What Students Need to Do: Students turn social studies information into clear written and visual products. They choose a useful format, organize facts, and list the sources they used.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students create an accurate journal entry, short report, outline, or graphic organizer for a given purpose. Their work has logical order, clear labels, and a simple bibliography.
Common Misconceptions: Students may copy source sentences instead of putting ideas in their own words. They may confuse an outline with a paragraph, leave graphic organizers unlabeled, or list only a website address as a source.
How to Assess It: Give students a short passage with source details. Ask them to create a labeled three-part organizer, write a four-sentence summary, and add one bibliography entry.

Lesson moves

Give pairs fact cards about a Texas leader, then have them sort the cards into a labeled organizer and build a short outline.
Ask students to write a journal entry from a settler's viewpoint, using three accurate facts and one feeling supported by events.
Play Format Match by having teams pair sample products with purpose cards such as compare ideas, report facts, or record a viewpoint.
Have students use a local museum webpage to make a one-page visitor guide with headings, images, captions, and a source entry.
