What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose a format that fits a social studies purpose, then organize facts and ideas clearly. They create written pieces and visual tools, and list the sources they used.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can use notes and sources to produce a clear journal entry, report, outline, or graphic organizer. The work stays focused, labels information clearly, and includes a usable bibliography.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may copy source wording instead of putting ideas in their own words. They may treat an outline as full paragraphs, leave visuals unlabeled, or list only website links in a bibliography.
How to Assess It
- Give students two short sources about a historical event. Ask them to create a labeled organizer, write one summary paragraph, and list both sources.

Play Format Match, where teams pair task cards with the best product, such as an outline, report, timeline, or bibliography.
Have students create a one-page museum display about a local landmark, including a caption, visual, short report, and source list.
