What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students communicate a social studies idea using words, pictures, labels, symbols, or an organizer. They choose a format that makes the information clear to a reader.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students produce an accurate, organized product with a clear main idea and relevant details. Their labels, symbols, pictures, and sentences work together and can be understood without extra explanation.

Common Misconceptions

Students may add pictures that are decorative but do not explain the idea. They may leave maps unlabeled, place events out of order, or copy facts without organizing them.

How to Assess It

Ask students to show the route from the classroom to the cafeteria using a labeled map. Check for a clear path, two landmarks, and a map key.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs paper, blocks, and sticky notes to build and label a map of the classroom.

  2. Ask students to write and illustrate three steps showing how a classroom rule helps the group.

  3. Play Organizer Match by having teams pair fact cards with a timeline, map, story sequence, or comparison chart.

  4. Have students create a visitor map showing the school office, cafeteria, library, and safe walking routes.
