What Students Need to Do: Students trace how an earlier conflict shaped a society’s present borders, government, economy, or social relations. They use evidence to explain links without claiming that one event caused everything.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students identify a conflict, its main causes and outcomes, and a related present condition. They support the connection with historical and current evidence and explain any limits.
Common Misconceptions: Students may assume every current problem has one historical cause or describe conflicts as based on unchanging hatred. They may confuse events that happened in sequence with proven cause and effect. They may also treat a society as one uniform group.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Name one past conflict studied, identify one current condition it influenced, and cite two details that support the connection.

Lesson moves

Pairs arrange dated conflict, treaty, border, and present-condition cards, then add arrows labeled cause, consequence, or continuing influence.
Write and discuss: Which present condition is most strongly linked to the conflict, and what evidence rules out a simple coincidence?
Play Evidence Match: teams pair historical evidence cards with current-condition cards, earning points only when they explain a defensible connection.
Compare a current news article about migration or borders with a historical map, then annotate two links and one limit.
