What Students Need to Do: Students describe what was happening before and around an event. They name relevant details about the time, place, people, ideas, and conflicts.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given an event and several facts, students select the facts that describe its background. They separate background conditions from the event itself and its later results.
Common Misconceptions: Students may retell the event instead of describing its background. They may give only a date or place. They may also confuse later results with conditions that existed beforehand.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Circle the two background facts for the Boston Tea Party: Britain taxed tea, colonists opposed taxation without representation, tea was dumped, Britain later passed the Intolerable Acts. Explain both choices.

Lesson moves

Give groups date, map, quote, and image cards for the Boston Tea Party, then have them sort background, event, and aftermath.
Ask students to write: Which conditions in colonial America help explain why the Boston Tea Party happened?
Play Context Match: students pair event cards with sets of time, place, people, and conflict clues, then defend each match.
Project a photo of a local landmark plaque, then list what was happening in the community when the named event occurred.
