What Students Need to Do: Students identify who is speaking and describe that person’s position on an issue or event. They compare views and use words or details from sources as evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given two sources, students accurately state each viewpoint and cite a clue that reveals it. They explain why the speakers may see the same event differently.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse a speaker’s viewpoint with a proven fact or with their own opinion. They may assume one view is automatically correct or that every group member thinks alike.
How to Assess It: Use this exit ticket: “Speaker A wants a new parking lot downtown. Speaker B wants to protect the town park.” Identify each viewpoint and underline the clue.

Lesson moves

Give pairs Patriot and Loyalist quote cards to sort, label by viewpoint, and underline words that reveal each position.
Ask students to write: “Why might two people who saw the same event describe it differently?”
Play Viewpoint Detective with short source cards, awarding points when teams name the speaker’s position and cite a matching clue.
Compare two headlines about one local event, then list what each headline emphasizes and whose concerns it reflects.
