What Students Need to Do: Students explain how two people or groups can see the same event or issue differently. They use each speaker’s role, interests, experiences, and words to describe the difference.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given two short accounts, students correctly name each perspective and cite a detail that reveals it. They explain why the perspectives differ without deciding that one must be wrong.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse perspective with fact versus opinion or assume every source is neutral. They may describe only their own view instead of identifying the view shown in a source.
How to Assess It: Give students two statements about a proposed longer school day, one from a parent and one from a student. Ask: What is each person’s view, and which words reveal it?

Lesson moves

Use role cards for a proposed school garden, then have students stand by support, oppose, or unsure signs and explain their assigned view.
Ask students to write how a student, teacher, and custodian might view a longer lunch period differently, and why.
Play Perspective Match by pairing anonymous statements with speaker cards, then require one clue from each statement as proof.
Compare two local headlines about the same community decision and list the words that signal each outlet’s angle.
