What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read or listen to accounts about the same topic and name each speaker's position. They use details from each account to explain how the views differ.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately describe more than one position without inserting their own opinion. They connect each position to a specific statement, reason, or concern in the source.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume every issue has only two sides or treat their own view as the correct answer. They may name the topic instead of the position, or infer a position without source evidence.
How to Assess It
- Give students two short quotes about a school phone policy. Ask them to state each speaker's position and underline one phrase that supports each answer.

Ways to Teach It
Post four stakeholder cards about a proposed community park, then have students sort statement strips under the person most likely to say each one.
Ask students to write how a parent, student, and principal might each view a later school start time.
Play viewpoint match by pairing anonymous quotes with stakeholder cards, then require students to explain each match using one clue.
Compare two local news headlines about the same event and list the different concerns or priorities each headline highlights.
