What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify a historical person or group and explain what they changed. They connect that past action to a law, custom, institution, belief, or practice in a society today.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students name the person or group, describe the historical action, and trace its effect to the present. They support the connection with accurate examples and dates.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may describe a famous person without explaining that person's lasting influence. They may confuse a group's original actions with later changes or assume one cause explains an entire society.
How to Assess It
- Give students one historical figure or group and ask: What did they change, and where can that influence be seen in a society today?

Ways to Teach It
Have pairs arrange action, short-term result, and present-day influence cards into cause-and-effect chains.
Ask students to write which had greater lasting influence on a society, one individual or one group, using two facts.
Play an influence matching game where students pair historical figures or groups with current laws, customs, institutions, or beliefs.
Examine a holiday, monument, banknote, or government building and identify the historical person or group whose influence it reflects.
