What Students Need to Do: Students examine how cultural, ethnic, religious, or immigrant groups experienced life in a shared society. They use evidence to explain each group’s contributions and how those contributions shaped the wider society.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can compare two groups using reliable sources and distinguish experiences from contributions. The student explains a specific social, political, economic, or cultural effect without treating either group as uniform.
Common Misconceptions: Students often list foods, holidays, or famous people without explaining their impact. They may describe all members of a group as having the same experience. Some confuse hardships a group faced with contributions it made.
How to Assess It: Give students two short source excerpts about different groups in one society. Ask: What did each group experience, what did each contribute, and how did one contribution change the society?

Lesson moves

Set up four source stations with photos, objects, maps, and short accounts; students sort evidence into experience, contribution, and impact.
Write and discuss: How can one group shape a society while also facing exclusion or unequal treatment?
Play an evidence-match game where teams pair group cards with experience, contribution, and impact cards, then defend each match.
Have students examine local menus, place names, festivals, or newspapers and trace one community contribution to a specific cultural group.
