What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain what makes a society multicultural. They identify several cultural groups and describe how those groups live, interact, and contribute within one society.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a community profile, students can decide whether it is multicultural and support the decision with specific details. They can distinguish cultural diversity from simple differences among individuals.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think multicultural only means people from different countries. They may focus only on food or clothing and overlook language, religion, traditions, and beliefs. They may assume groups must give up their customs to belong.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A town includes several cultural groups that share schools and laws while keeping distinct traditions. Is the town multicultural, and what two details support your answer?
