What Students Need to Do: Students identify how people from different racial, ethnic, and religious groups shaped American culture, government, work, and public life. They explain each contribution using historical evidence and connect it to national identity.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can compare contributions from several groups without reducing each group to one famous person. They support their analysis with accurate examples and explain lasting effects.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat national identity as one shared culture or list achievements without explaining their impact. They may also confuse a person’s race, ethnicity, religion, and nationality.
How to Assess It: Give an exit ticket asking students to name contributions from two different groups and explain how each shaped American identity. Require one historical detail per contribution.

Lesson moves

Give pairs source cards about six historical figures, then have students build a paper mosaic linking each contribution to American identity.
Ask students to write: Which contribution most changed how Americans understood freedom, equality, or citizenship, and what evidence supports your choice?
Run a matching game connecting people, groups, contributions, and lasting effects, then require students to defend one match aloud.
Have students research a local street, monument, school, or festival and explain how it reflects one group’s contribution to community identity.
