What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students describe how different U.S. communities mark celebrations, practice faith, prepare food, make art, and pass traditions between generations. They use specific examples and avoid assuming every member of a group follows the same custom.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can name a group, describe a custom with accurate details, and explain when or why people practice it. The student can compare two traditions and support each description with a photo, text, or firsthand account.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat race, ethnicity, and religion as the same thing, or label a food or holiday as belonging to only one group. They may also claim that all group members follow a tradition, ignoring family, regional, and individual differences.
How to Assess It
- Give students two photos with short captions showing different community celebrations. Ask students to identify each group, describe the custom, and cite one supporting detail.

Ways to Teach It
Set up a mini museum with printed photos and objects, then have pairs write labels naming each custom, its community, and its purpose.
Discuss: “How can we describe a group’s tradition accurately without suggesting that every member practices it?”
Play a source-match game where teams pair custom cards with group cards and evidence cards, then explain each match.
Use a local festival calendar to identify three community traditions, then research who observes each one and how it is practiced.
