What Students Need to Do: Students name celebrations observed by different cultural or ethnic groups. They explain why people observe each celebration and what its traditions, symbols, or stories mean.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students connect a celebration to the people who observe it and give a clear reason it matters. They use details such as a symbol, custom, or story as evidence.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think every celebration is simply a party or that all families celebrate it the same way. They may list foods and decorations without explaining their meaning.
How to Assess It: Give students a picture from a celebration studied in class. Ask, “What celebration might this show, and why is it meaningful to the people who observe it?”

Lesson moves

Have pairs sort photos of foods, clothing, symbols, and customs by celebration, then label what each item represents.
Ask students to write: “Why do communities keep celebrations and traditions over many years?”
Play a matching game with celebration cards, tradition cards, and meaning cards, requiring students to explain each completed set.
Students interview a family or community member about a celebration, then share one tradition and why it matters.
