What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify why different celebrations matter to the people and communities who observe them. They compare purposes, traditions, symbols, foods, stories, and activities using accurate details.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given two celebrations, students name a shared feature, a difference, and the meaning of each event. They avoid claiming that everyone in a culture celebrates in the same way.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may call Día de los Muertos "Mexican Halloween" or assume Lunar New Year is celebrated only in China. They may list foods or clothing without explaining their meaning. They may also assume every person from a cultural group follows the same traditions.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Compare Diwali and Lunar New Year. Name one similarity, one difference, and one reason each celebration matters to people who observe it.
