What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students name customs, sayings, home languages, and shared ideas that matter to families and communities. They explain why people keep these practices. They use story details to show what a folktale or legend teaches about a community.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can describe a family or community practice without treating it as true for everyone. The student can explain its purpose, such as remembering history or showing respect. The student can point to a story detail that shows a shared value or custom.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think traditions are only holidays, food, or clothing. They may assume every family in a community follows the same practices. They may also treat folktales as factual history or miss the lesson carried by the story.
How to Assess It
- After reading The Empty Pot, ask: “What belief or value does the story show? Draw one story detail and write a sentence explaining your answer.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs photo cards showing greetings, foods, celebrations, stories, and languages, then have them sort the cards and explain their choices.
Ask students to complete: “A practice can matter to a family or community because...” and share one example.
Play Story Clue Match by pairing folktale event cards with value cards such as honesty, courage, kindness, or respect.
Invite a school staff member to share a greeting, saying, story, or tradition, then have students explain why it matters.
