What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students listen to or read a folktale or legend and notice what it shows about a community. They identify examples of beliefs, special words, customs, celebrations, or ways people behave.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student names a detail from the story and connects it to a community belief, language, or tradition. The student explains the connection using a complete sentence and story evidence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat every story detail as a fact about the community. They may also retell the plot without explaining what a custom, repeated phrase, or character choice reveals.
How to Assess It
- Read a short folktale, then ask: “What does one story detail show about the community’s beliefs, language, or traditions?” Require one specific detail.
