What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify what different celebrations honor, remember, or express. They explain how traditions, symbols, foods, music, or gatherings connect people in a community.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can describe several celebrations from their community and elsewhere. They can name a tradition and explain why it matters to the people who take part.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think a celebration is only about food, clothing, or entertainment. They may assume everyone in an ethnic or cultural group celebrates the same way, or confuse a tradition with its meaning.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Choose one celebration, name one tradition, and explain in two sentences why the celebration matters to its community.
