What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students examine two celebrations from different cultural or ethnic groups. They identify shared features and differences in purpose, customs, food, clothing, music, and symbols.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students name at least one accurate similarity and one accurate difference between two celebrations. They support each comparison with details from pictures, texts, or videos.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume everyone in a cultural group celebrates in the same way. They may also compare only dates or foods, or label unfamiliar customs as strange.

How to Assess It

Give students pictures and short descriptions of Lunar New Year and Día de los Muertos. Ask them to write one similarity and one difference, using evidence from the materials.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Provide photo cards from two celebrations, then have pairs sort them into shared features and features unique to each celebration.

  2. Ask students, "How can two celebrations have similar activities but different meanings?" and require one example from class materials.

  3. Play Celebration Match by having students pair custom cards with purpose cards, then explain whether each feature is shared or different.

  4. Read two local community event flyers and have students compare the foods, music, activities, and reasons people gather.
