What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify specific things people do during two holidays or celebrations, such as sharing food, displaying symbols, singing, or gathering. They tell one way the events are alike and one way they are different.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students make a clear comparison using details from pictures, short texts, or class examples. They use words such as both, same, and different, while recognizing that families may have different customs.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may list facts about each event without comparing them. They may confuse why or when an event occurs with how people observe it, or assume every family follows the same customs.
How to Assess It
- Show pictures of a birthday party and an Independence Day picnic. Ask, “Draw or write one thing people do at both events and one thing they do differently.”

Ways to Teach It
Give students picture cards for birthdays and Independence Day; have them sort each card under Both, Birthday, or Independence Day.
Ask, “How are birthdays and Independence Day observed alike and differently?” Students draw one comparison and label the evidence.
Play Same or Different: show two celebration photos, and students hold up S or D cards before explaining one visible detail.
Students interview a family member about one celebration custom, then compare it with a partner’s custom using a Venn diagram.
