What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify features of two celebrations, such as foods, music, clothing, activities, symbols, and reasons for gathering. They explain similarities and differences using details from photos, short texts, or interviews.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students organize accurate details in a Venn diagram or chart. They make a clear comparison without claiming that every person in a cultural group celebrates the same way.

Common Misconceptions

Students may compare which celebration is better instead of describing similarities and differences. They may also assume a celebration looks the same everywhere or that all group members participate.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Name one similarity and one difference between a local celebration and one held elsewhere. Support each comparison with a detail from a class source.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs photos, menus, and event programs from two celebrations, then have them sort details into a Venn diagram.

  2. Ask students to write: How do food, music, or traditions show what each community values?

  3. Play Celebration Match by having students pair detail cards with the correct celebration, then explain one comparison to a partner.

  4. Examine two community event flyers and compare dates, locations, activities, costs, and intended audiences.
