What Students Need to Do: Students identify specific ways that several racial, ethnic, and religious communities have shaped the United States. They give a brief explanation connecting those examples to American culture, institutions, or civic life.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student names the people or community, describes a specific contribution, and explains its lasting effect. The student uses accurate examples from several groups rather than giving a simple list.
Common Misconceptions: Students may assume American identity comes from one dominant culture. They may focus only on food and holidays or confuse racial, ethnic, and religious identities. They may also treat every member of a group as having the same experience.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Choose two communities studied today. For each, name one contribution and explain how it shaped American life or identity.

Lesson moves

Pairs arrange six biography and artifact cards on a table, then add caption cards explaining each contribution to American life.
Write: How can several communities shape one national identity while keeping distinct traditions? Use two examples from the lesson.
Play a source-match game connecting a person or community, a contribution, and its effect, then require players to explain each match.
