What Students Need to Do

Students distinguish rural, suburban, and urban communities using population density, land use, and visible features. They use maps to explain how water, landforms, transportation, jobs, and resources shape population patterns.

Students correctly classify communities and support each choice with map or image evidence. They locate the five largest urban areas on a provided map and explain their locations and overall distribution.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think rural means uninhabited or that every community outside a city is suburban. They may confuse population with land area. They may also name climate as the only reason people settle in a place.

How to Assess It

Give students three settlement images and a United States population map with five major urban areas circled. Ask them to classify each image, explain two location factors, and describe the cities' overall distribution.

   Give pairs physical and transportation maps plus cards for the five largest urban areas, then have them place cards and attach factor labels.

   Ask: Why do large urban areas cluster near coasts, waterways, and transportation routes? Students cite two map details in a paragraph.

   Play Settlement Sort: teams classify photo cards as rural, suburban, or urban, then earn a point by naming visible evidence.
