What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify Helen Keller, Clara Barton, and Ruby Bridges from key facts about their lives. They explain how each person showed courage, service, fairness, or responsibility.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can match each person to her actions and describe the citizenship trait shown. The student supports the explanation with a specific fact, not just a general claim that the person helped others.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think good citizenship only means following rules or holding public office. They may confuse Barton’s disaster relief, Keller’s advocacy, and Bridges’s role in school integration.

How to Assess It

Give students three action cards, one for each person. Ask them to name each figure, then choose one card and explain how the action shows good citizenship.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Students match portrait, action, and citizenship trait cards for Keller, Barton, and Bridges, then check each set with a short biography.

  2. Ask students to write: Which person showed the most courage, and what specific action supports your answer?

  3. Play a clue game where teams identify the person, then earn a second point by naming the citizenship trait shown.

  4. Students choose a school problem and write one action they could take, modeled on Barton’s service, Keller’s advocacy, or Bridges’s courage.
