What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students name people from the past and present who showed good citizenship. They tell what each person did to help others, improve a community, or support fairness.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can identify Benjamin Franklin, Eleanor Roosevelt, and another good citizen from pictures or short descriptions. The student gives a specific example of each person’s actions.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think being famous or holding office automatically makes someone a good citizen. They may also describe a kind personality without naming an action that helped others.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to choose Benjamin Franklin or Eleanor Roosevelt, draw one citizenship action, and complete: “This showed good citizenship because ____.”
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Give pairs portrait cards and action cards to match, including Franklin’s library work and Roosevelt’s support for human rights.
Read a short biography, then ask, “Which action showed good citizenship, and who did it help?”
Play “Who Am I?” using clues about each person’s actions, then have students name the citizen and explain their choice.
Interview a school helper, then compare that person’s community service with an action by Franklin or Roosevelt.
