What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students name people from history who acted as good citizens. They describe a specific action each person took and explain how it helped others or the country.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly match figures such as Abigail Adams, Sojourner Truth, WASPs, and Navajo Code Talkers with their contributions. They use evidence from a short text or image to explain good citizenship.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think being famous automatically makes someone a good citizen. They may confuse people’s roles, such as saying Navajo Code Talkers flew planes or WASPs created military codes.
How to Assess It
- Give students one picture and a short paragraph about a historical figure. Ask, “What did this person do, and how did it show good citizenship?”

Ways to Teach It
Sort portrait, action, and citizenship trait cards for Paul Revere, Abigail Adams, WASPs, Navajo Code Talkers, and Sojourner Truth.
Write two sentences answering, “Which person showed courage, and what action proves it?”
Play a clue game where students identify a historical figure from three facts, then name the citizenship trait shown.
Interview a school helper about serving others, then compare that person’s actions with one historical figure studied.
