What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students name a person who acted bravely to help others. They explain what the person did, who was helped, and why the action was heroic.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students accurately describe Harriet Tubman’s work guiding enslaved people to freedom or Todd Beamer’s actions aboard Flight 93. They support the word heroic with facts about courage, risk, and service to others.

Common Misconceptions

Students may call someone heroic only because the person is famous, talented, or powerful. They may confuse a character trait with a deed or mix up Harriet Tubman’s and Todd Beamer’s historical settings.

How to Assess It

Give students one picture and a short paragraph about Harriet Tubman or Todd Beamer. Ask, “What did this person do, and why was it heroic?”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have pairs arrange picture and fact cards showing Harriet Tubman’s or Todd Beamer’s actions, then explain the sequence.

  2. Ask students to write: “Is a person heroic because of who they are or what they do? Use one historical example.”

  3. Play Hero or Helpful, reading action cards while students classify each action and defend whether it shows courage, sacrifice, or everyday kindness.

  4. Read a local news story about a rescuer or community helper, then compare that person’s actions with Harriet Tubman’s or Todd Beamer’s.
