What Students Need to Do: Students recognize spans of one, ten, and one hundred years. They choose the right time word when describing when historical events happened.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given two dates, students correctly name the length of time between them. They can explain that 1920 to 1930 is a decade and 1900 to 2000 is a century.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat a decade or century as any long period in the past. They may also mix up ten and one hundred years or count both endpoint years.
How to Assess It: Ask students to label each span as a year, decade, or century: 1776 to 1777, 1920 to 1930, and 1900 to 2000.

Lesson moves

Build a paper timeline from 1900 to 2000, then add colored brackets showing one year, one decade, and one century.
Write about how a classroom, town, or invention might change over one year, one decade, and one century.
Play a card match game using date pairs and cards labeled year, decade, and century.
