What Students Need to Do: Students identify whether events happened in historical times or the present. They place events in chronological order using dates, time words, and picture clues.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students correctly sequence several events from earliest to latest. They explain their order using words such as long ago, before, after, and present.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse the order in which pictures appear with the order events occurred. They may also label any event before today as historical.
How to Assess It: Give students four dated event cards to order. Ask them to label each event historical or present and explain one choice.

Lesson moves

Give pairs picture cards showing communication tools, then have them sort historical and present examples and arrange each group by time.
Ask students to write three sentences explaining how a classroom from long ago differs from their classroom now.
Play Timeline Relay, where teams race to place dated event cards from earliest to latest and justify one placement.
Use family photos from different years to build a personal timeline and discuss which images show historical or present times.
