What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use time words to place events before now, happening now, or after now. They explain when an event occurs using the correct term.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly sort events into three time periods. They use each time word in a clear sentence and explain their choices.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse the past with any event from long ago, rather than something as recent as yesterday. They may also treat plans as if they are happening now.

How to Assess It

Give students three events: losing a tooth last week, reading this prompt now, and visiting a park next Saturday. Ask them to label each event and explain one choice.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs picture cards of familiar events to place on a three-part timeline labeled past, present, and future.

  2. Ask students to write one sentence about something they did, something they are doing, and something they plan to do.

  3. Play a corner game where students move to the correct time-word sign after hearing an event read aloud.

  4. Use a weekly classroom calendar to discuss completed events, today's activities, and upcoming plans.
