What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find dates on a calendar and tell when events happen. They count forward or backward to find the number of days or weeks between events.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can locate today, yesterday, and tomorrow, then identify the correct week and month. The student can use calendar squares to count elapsed days or weeks.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count the starting date as a full day when finding elapsed time. They may think every month has the same number of days or confuse a week with the school week.
How to Assess It
- Give students a monthly calendar and ask, “The class trip is on May 18. How many days after May 12 is the trip?”

Ways to Teach It
Build a class calendar with date cards, then have students place school events and count the days between two cards.
Ask students to write one sentence explaining how they know whether an event is days, weeks, or months away.
Play Calendar Race by calling clues such as “three days after the 10th” and having partners cover the correct date.
Use a birthday calendar to compare how many weeks or months remain until three classmates’ birthdays.
