What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students put events in sequence and label them as past, present, or future. They read and make simple timelines using dates, pictures, and captions. They share ideas through speaking, writing, maps, stories, and organizers while listening and responding respectfully.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given mixed event cards, students place them in order and explain how they know. They create an accurate timeline with labels and use terms such as past, present, future, before, and after correctly.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse the past with anything that happened long ago, rather than something that already happened. They may place dates out of order or read a timeline from right to left. They may also leave maps and organizers unlabeled.

How to Assess It

Give students four picture cards showing yesterday, today, and tomorrow events. Ask them to order the cards, make a timeline, and explain the order using before, after, past, present, and future.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have pairs arrange picture cards from a familiar school day, then glue them onto a labeled timeline.

  2. Ask students to write three sentences about something they did yesterday, do today, and plan to do tomorrow.

  3. Play a chronology relay where teams race to arrange dated event cards and explain one placement using before or after.

  4. Use a weekly classroom calendar to compare completed events, today’s event, and upcoming events.
