What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use words such as citizen, community, map, timeline, past, goods, and services when speaking and writing. They choose terms that fit the topic and context.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can explain a term in their own words and use it correctly in a sentence. They can also label a picture, map, chart, or timeline with accurate terms.

Common Misconceptions

Students may swap related terms, such as goods and services, map and globe, or past and present. They may memorize a definition but use the word incorrectly when explaining an example.

How to Assess It

Give students three terms from the current unit. Ask them to choose two, define each, and use each correctly in a sentence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have pairs sort picture and word cards into map, history, government, economy, and culture groups, then explain two matches.

  2. Have students write two sentences explaining how goods and services differ, using both terms correctly.

  3. Play vocabulary charades with current unit terms while classmates name the term and explain the clue.

  4. Read a local news photo caption and identify social studies terms that describe the people, place, event, or work shown.
