What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify the meaning of terms from the current history, geography, economics, or civics unit. They use each term accurately in speech and writing and distinguish between similar terms.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can explain a term in their own words and match it to a correct example. They can use the term in a sentence that shows its meaning.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may memorize definitions but use terms in the wrong context. They may confuse related terms, such as colony and state, or primary source and secondary source.
How to Assess It
- Give students four current unit terms and one short historical scenario. Ask them to use two terms in sentences that accurately explain the scenario.

Ways to Teach It
Have pairs sort term, definition, example, and nonexample cards, then defend one completed set to the class.
Display a unit image and ask, “Which three social studies terms describe this source, and what evidence supports each choice?”
Play vocabulary charades using current unit terms, with teammates naming the term and explaining the clue after each round.
Give students a local news article and have them highlight unit terms or label ideas that match those terms.
