What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students compare tools and inventions from the past with those used today. They explain how technology changed home life, communication, transportation, and play. They also match selected inventors with their contributions.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can name a technology and explain one way it changed daily life. The student can match Bell with the telephone, Edison with electric lighting, and Morgan with the traffic signal or safety hood.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think technology means only computers and phones. They may confuse inventors or believe one person created every part of an invention alone. They may also assume families in the past had no technology.

How to Assess It

Give students an exit ticket with one past and present picture pair. Ask them to circle the newer technology, explain one change it caused, and match one inventor to an invention.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Sort picture cards of past and present tools into home life, communication, transportation, and recreation groups, then explain one match.

  2. Write or draw a response to the prompt, "How would your family’s day change without phones, cars, or electric lights?"

  3. Play Inventor Match by pairing name cards for Bell, Edison, and Morgan with picture cards showing their contributions.

  4. Make a classroom technology list, then choose one item and describe how school would be different without it.
